Prof. Dr. William F. Martin

Prof. Dr. William F. Martin

Institute of Molecular Evolution Heinrich-Heine-Universität Düsseldorf, Germany

Prof. Dr. William Frank Martin is a full professor and Director of the Institute for Molecular Evolution at Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf, Germany. He is a frequent guest at scientific congresses and symposia organized by HDBMB in Croatia. At his Institute for Molecular Evolution, several students from Croatia have had the opportunity to conduct research that has resulted in scientific publications in prestigious journals, as well as master’s and doctoral theses. Prof. Martin’s field of scientific work is evolutionary biology, specifically the physiology of evolution. His most impactful research has helped explain key processes in the two most important evolutionary transitions: endosymbiosis in the origin of eukaryotes and geochemistry in the origin of life. His most well-known and widely cited papers address major theories essential for understanding the evolution of life: the Hydrogen Hypothesis on the Origin of Mitochondria (1998) and Origin of Life and Hydrothermal Vents (2008). Prof. Martin’s bibliography includes over 270 publications in leading international scientific journals. According to Google Scholar, his work has been cited 41,288 times with an h-index of 97, while according to the ISI database, he has 25,300 citations and an h-index of 80.
