Join us at the HDBMB booth as part of the “Science and Society” program, from April 20 to April 25 at the Technical Museum in Zagreb, where we’ll celebrate by painting with proteins.
This year’s festival theme is energy, and our interactive exhibit is called “Imprints of Life’s Energy”. At our stand, we will demonstrate how proteins can be detected through a simple yet visually striking chemical reaction. Mario, Lana, Leona, Marija, and Marko will work with visitors to create small artworks and “business cards” using stamps soaked in protein solution, producing unique imprints.
By applying ninhydrin—a reagent that reacts with amino acids—the prints will develop into a characteristic purple color, revealing the “hidden” traces of proteins.
This activity combines biochemistry and molecular biology in an experience that is both creative and educational, allowing participants to explore through their own imprints how scientists detect biomolecules and how proteins are connected to the energy that drives living systems.
