HDBMB celebrated its 40th Anniversary with a series of events.
As part of the HDBMB2016 Congress (Split, June 1 – 4, 2016), a Symposium on 40 years of the Society’s activities was organised, providing an opportunity to recall all important events and significant activities. In his presentation, Academician Željko Kućan recalled the events related to the accession of the independent Croatian Biochemical Society to the Federation of European Biochemical Societies (FEBS) and the International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (IUBMBU). Professor Israel Pecht (Israel), FEBS Secretary General, was appointed an Honorary Member of the HDBMB for his exceptional services in promoting the HDBMB in Europe.
In addition, on October 28, 2016 a ceremony was held at Matica Hrvatska in Zagreb, which provided an opportunity to meet with many guests and friends of the HDBMB. During the ceremony, Prof Jadranka Varljen, a long-term member and president of the Society (2005-2009), was awarded the Award for contribution to the development of molecular biosciences for her many years of recognizable work in HDBMB activities.
The Anniversary was an opportunity to publicize the achievements of biochemistry and molecular biology to a wide audience, popularize biomolecular research and highlight its benefits to the society. Many members of the Society participated in the 40th Anniversary celebration and organized a series of lectures at institutes, faculties and schools in Osijek, Split, Rijeka and Zagreb in 2016. About thirty members prepared popular science articles about their research that were published in a double issue of the journal for the popularization of the science Priroda (2016 1-2) dedicated to the Anniversary. In this way, the Croatian Natural Science Society, as the publisher of journal Priroda, joined the celebration of the jubilee. In addition, a memorial poster Molecular Machinery was printed for schoolchildren and students, showing hundreds of crystal structures of proteins and important macromolecules that make up a living cell.
HDBMB celebrated its 30th Anniversary as a part of the HDBMB2006 Congress (Vodice, October 3 – 7, 2006), by organising a Symposium on the 30th Anniversary of the Society. It was an opportunity to remember the beginnings of the Society, the people who founded it and those who, through their activities, committed the Society and contributed to its development and reputation. In addition, it was an opportunity to review the scientific, teaching and social, national and international achievements of the Society over the years.
The Silver Jubilee of the Society was celebrated by organising the HB2000 Congress, one year before the 25th anniversary. On this occasion, the Society appointed Honorary Members of the HBD, in order to thank foreign colleagues who supported the research of Croatian biochemists, encouraged the gathering of research groups on current issues in the field of molecular life sciences and / or contributed to the development and recognition of the Society in the international scientific community.
20th Anniversary of the founding of HDBMB
The 20th Anniversary of the Society was celebrated by organising the HB96 Meeting in Zagreb’s Old Town Hall. A review of the 20th Anniversary of the founding of the Society was prepared by Elsa Reiner, which was published in the journal Periodicum biologorum 98(3).
