40th ANNIVERSARY of HDBMB
During year 2016 the Croatian Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (HDBMB) proudly celebrated its 40th Anniversary through various activities.
The book 40th Anniversary of the HDBMB provides an overview and description of the important events for the HDBMB as well as the more significant activities of its members with detailed analysis of the last ten years.
The Society organized series of lectures for high school and university students in order to popularize research in biochemistry and molecular biology. Priroda (Nature), Croatian journal for popularization of natural sciences, dedicated its double edition (number 1-2/2016) to 40th Anniversary of the HDBMB. Thirty members of the Society wrote popular-scientific articles about modern and interesting themes from areas of biochemistry and molecular biology and other molecular life sciences.
Special issue of Croatian scientific journal Periodicum biologorum was devoted to celebration of 40th Anniversary of the HDBMB. Nine outstanding scientists responded to the invitation of dr. Zrinka Kovarik, president of the HDBMB and wrote articles for this Jubilee issue. Their effort indicates and signifies their strong support for the future work and acitivities of the HDBMB.
The PDB poster Molecular Machinery depicting hundreds of crystal structures of protein and important macromolecules that make up a living cell was translated to Croatian language and printed for pupils and students.
Zoran Radić, HDBMB member and eminent Croatian scientist living and working abroad, received the Spiridion Brusina Medal awarded by the Croatian Society of Natural Sciences. The Medal was awarded at the official ceremony to mark the 40th anniversary of the HDBMB in Zagreb (28 Oct 2016), when Prof Radić gave an inspiring 3D lecture entitled 50 years of allosteric hypothesis in cholinesterases, 25 years of its proof.
Congress HDBMB2016 - on the Occasion of the 40th Anniversary was successfully organized in Split, Croatia on June 1 – 4, 2016. We organized a mini-symposium on the 40 years of the Society, where we remembered the important events and previous relevant activities of the HDBMB. Within the Mini-symposium Prof Israel Pecht (Weizmann Institute of Science, Israel), the Secretary General of FEBS, was named as a new honorary member of the HDBMB, because of his exceptional merit for the promotion of HDBMB and our work in FEBS. Excellent lectures were given by Croatian and international scientists. Prof Susan Taylor (University of California, San Diego, USA) was the IUBMB Ed Wood Lecturer and Prof Ivan Matić (Université Paris Descartes, France) was the FEBS National Lecturer.
